The Ponte Vedra Inn and Club and Stellers Gallery invite you to join us in an evening of art and a booksigning featuring nationally acclaimed artist, Dennis Campay, Thursday October 8th from 5:30-7:30pm.
Dennis Campay refers to himself as a “figurative abstractionist”, meaning he paints representations of objects and environments that do not really exist. “One may look at a painting and think it is a place they have been, but it is because I have painted the emotional aspect of that environment in a figurative way.” he said. His work invites you into richly colored worlds of reverie and reality, intimacy and spiritual journey drawing on a language of symbols that suggest rather than shout. Doric columns, porticos, slatted shutters, and balconies, gently coexist with coastal marshes, white-washed churches, boats, and bridges. Silvery bodies of water, worn books, the solitary piano, and ubiquitous chairs take their place where interiors and exteriors blend and beckon, evoking memories, illusions and dreams.
Campay has received numerous awards, including for his work on paper at the prestigious 2001 Florence Biennale and most recently in 2006, was a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Grant. He has been featured in Art & Antiques magazine, New American Paintings and he is the subject of John T. Spike’s book, Campay: New Paintings (2002).
A graduate of the Atlanta College of Art in 1992, Dennis and his wife, Colette now divide their time between Atlanta and the historic neighborhood of San Marco in Jacksonville, FL.
